In this class we undertake the construction of a small, shaker inspired night stand, suitable for use in a bedroom, but equally at home next to your favourite chair in the living room, den or library. The clean lines of this piece make it at home in both traditional and contemporary settings, and it may be built to incorporate a drawer (see our Drawer Making and Fitting class), or in a simplified version without one.

We start the class with the development of a cut list and estimation of materials, and proceed with selecting our lumber with attention to the use of figure to strengthen the design of the piece. We will discuss and demonstrate a variety of techniques for cutting mortise and tenon joinery to close tolerances, making use of routers, the table saw, band saw and horizontal mortiser as well as our hand tools. We will taper the legs on the bandsaw with a simple and safe shop made jig and finally, cover strategies for gluing up a flat table top, beveling it on the underside, and attaching it to accommodate seasonal wood movement.
