Drawer Making and Fitting

   Start Date:  February 9, 2015
                   October 5, 2015

Tuition and Materials: $875

It never fails; when someone examines a piece of furniture, they will open and close a drawer if they can find one! A well fit drawer is a pleasure to use, and a hallmark of a carefully made piece of furniture.

In this class, we begin with a demonstration of classic hand-cut dovetails, and after "warming up" with some practice joints, proceed with the building and fitting of a traditional solid wood drawer featuring through and lapped dovetails and a solid wood bottom.

We’ll examine the nuances of a well fit drawer, material selection, grain continuity, alternate drawer suspension systems, the use of drawer slips and accommodating seasonal wood movement. Students will fit their drawers to the table started in Build a Shaker Nightstand or a study carcass prepared expressly for this exercise.
