It never fails; when someone examines a piece of furniture, they will open and close a drawer if they can find one! A well fit drawer is a pleasure to use, and a hallmark of a carefully made piece of furniture. In this class, we begin with the building and fitting of a traditional solid wood drawer, featuring lapped and through dovetails and a solid wood bottom. We’ll examine the nuances of a well fit drawer, material selection, grain continuity, alternate drawer suspension systems, the use of drawer slips and accommodating seasonal wood movement. Students will fit their drawers to the table started in Mastering Machinery, their cabinet from Joinery For Furniture Makers, or a study carcass prepared expressly for this exercise.

In the second segment of this course, we continue with the selection of stock for the construction of a solid wood, raised panel door, with consideration of how our choices affect the stability and aesthetics of the finished door. We examine the various methods of joinery used in door construction, including cope and stick, blind, floating, and through mortise and tenon. After building their own door with through mortise and tenons and a solid raised panel, students are lead through a step by step process to accurately fit and hang a door on the small cabinet or lidded box made in Joinery For Furniture Makers, or a study carcass built for this exercise.
