Small side tables like these are always useful, they're a great design project, and fun to build. I often try out new ideas in a small table first — an inlay design, leg shape, tabletop edge profile, or apron details. During this class we are going to build tables from start to finish, from drawings to the shellac, and end with a final extremely useful critique of what we've made. Above all this is a week of fun and exploration. |

The tables I have in mind have uncomplicated joinery, with the slight twist the legs are splayed for aesthetic and stability reasons. Beyond that anything goes — you design the leg shape, the shape of the top and overhang, overall proportions, choose materials, and details. There will be plenty of time to play with these different elements, and also many of my favorite details such as beads, inlays, and bevels, A drawer is a possibility, but we'll probably go no further than discussing how this could be done and what it adds to the table. |

Naturally hand tools will figure prominently in the way we approach building our tables, for efficiency, accuracy, and for the high quality work they are capable of. We'll also discuss ways of working, from using patterns to story sticks, producing useful drawings quickly, construction strategies, when to use machines, and even how choice of materials can dramatically affect the process and outcome. |
