Rosewood Studio Newsletter March 2010

Last month we had the pleasure of presenting guest instructor Michael Fortune for his Build a Cool Table class. By the end of the week, we had quite a variety of designs, and everyone left with expanded skills and increased confidence in their abilities to design and build. As always, Michael left us looking forward to his return to the school, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Our thanks to all of you who attended Michael’s presentation on February 17th. Your generous donation of cash and 116 pounds of food to the Lanark County Food Bank is most sincerely appreciated.

Our Resident Craftsman Nick Moore was the feature artist in the February 2010 issue of the Humm, the monthly Ottawa Valley arts and entertainment newspaper. Nick’s work was prominently featured on the cover and in an article on page three. If you missed it, the Humm archives past issues here. Take a peek and learn more about Nick and his work. Nicely done mate, you’ve earned it!

Excellence With Hand Tools February 2010

As many of you may have already heard, after eight years in the Thoburn Mill in Almonte, Ontario, Rosewood Studio is looking for a new home. Our lease has expired, and with the spectacular views of the river and waterfalls out our windows, it’s easy to understand why the owners of the building will be converting the space we’ve occupied since the school opened into residential condominium units. They will make beautiful homes.

In the meantime, we face the challenge of finding a new location. We are investigating a number of prospects, but so far have been unable to arrange anything definite.

The last class in our present location will be the April 19th Mastering Machinery course. The soonest we could be moved into a new space would be for our May 31st Excellence With Hand Tools class, but at this point cannot guarantee we will be ready. We will continue to tentatively reserve spaces for those interested in classes from June 2010 forward without the requirement of deposits until we are able to confirm our new location. We understand that this makes planning difficult, but given the circumstances believe it is our best course of action. Please bear with us as we continue the process of finding the right space for Rosewood.

We do however have some exciting offerings still to come at our current location, starting with our hosting of a Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event  March 5th and 6th. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to come out between noon and 6 pm. Friday and 10 am. and 5 pm. Saturday for informative demonstrations and a chance to get their hands on some beautiful hand tools. We hope you will be able to join us.

Adrian Ferrazzutti will be teaching Studio Veneering Techniques  starting March 29, 2010. Adrian initially trained with James Krenov, and has gone on to become one of Canada’s leading fine furniture makers. Not only is he a master at what he does, but student’s routinely comment on how much fun they have in his classes. If you have yet to venture beyond the use of solid wood and would like to explore the possibilities veneer opens up, or if you simply want to advance your current level of technique, this is a class you won’t want to miss.

Our last guest instructor here at the Thoburn Mill location will be Garrett Hack. Garrett needs little introduction, as most of you will be familiar with him through his books and numerous articles in Fine Woodworking magazine. Garrett will be here the week after Adrian, April 5 to 9, 2010 for Tables Without Reservations. Come and see why Garrett is one of the favourite woodworking instructors in North America today.

Following Garrett’s class, we will offer the first two classes in our Craftsmanship Series, Excellence With Hand Tools and Mastering Machinery, for the last time in our current location. At this writing, we still have spaces in both classes. It would be great to have you join us.

Finally, we are having a “moving sale” in the Rosewood tool store. Most items are selling at 50% to 75% off, because as they say, I’d rather sell them than move them. With apologies to our customers from far away, these sale prices are available only for cash and carry sales here at the school.

That about sums things up. Wish us well in our search for a new location, and as the expression goes, we'll let you know as soon as we do. And if there was anything in particular about our facilities you thought needed improvement, now would be a really good time to hear about them!

Wishing you well,

Ron Barter,
Rosewood Studio
