Learning to work with veneer opens a whole new palette and range of design possibilities to your work not easily accomplished with solid wood. Learning to create curved components literally adds a whole new dimension to your projects. Achieving this doesn’t have to be complicated, but can be as simple as using bending ply and a robust form.
We’ll begin the week by creating a form to bend and press our components. Starting with a full size sketch, we’ll develop a template that can be used to create the identical ribs that that will then be assembled into a pressing form.
Next, we’ll use a vacuum bag to press our bending ply substrate and veneer sandwich on the form to bring our curved panel to life. Using more veneer and plywood we’ll create a shelf that will hold our keys, wallet or phone. Various edging techniques will be used to cover and protect exposed plywood edges and complete the construction of our showpieces.
Along the way, alternate methods of applying veneer will be covered, giving you multiple options for tackling this liberating and inspiring way of working wood. Discussions through the week will also cover jointing techniques, adhesives, tools, tapes, finishes and more.
This is a great course to introduce the techniques and the design possibilities opened up by veneers, and breaking out of the box of flat and square components. We hope you can join us.
Pre-requisites: Excellence With Hand Tools and Mastering Machinery or equivalent. This course is suitable for woodworkers with an intermediate to advanced level of skill, able to safely operate machinery and sharpen and use basic hand tools.
